An absolute classic. There is no way to describe the atmosphere at the Credit Union Centre tonight. If these two teams meet up in the gold medal game I think the Saskatoon EMTs better bring about 15,000 defibrillators with them.
I think Team USA was the aggressor and played the better game overall. Team Canada’s head coach had the same assessment. I’ll post some video later with the coaches’ press conference with the comments to back this up.
The U.S. was beating Canada to the puck almost the entire game. Things changed late in the third though and you have to give the Canadians credit. This wasn’t a fluke bounce or a bad call that changed a game. Canada flat outworked Team USA late and willed the game to overtime.
Once it hit the shootout it was a crapshoot in my opinion. Blais said he felt the first Canada goal, which Campbell had saved, but trickled in, rattled the young goaltender. That may be, but it could have gone either way.
The key for Team USA is to bounce back from the defeat. If there is any sort of hangover, Finland will be all to happy to pounce all over the Americans. This tournament is a loooooong way from over.
I’ll post some video later tonight and tomorrow and also break down what awaits in the quarterfinals.
As a wise Team USA staff member said tonight in the locker room: Rocky didn’t win the first fight either.

2:10 – What looked like a Canada goal has been initially waved off for I think goaltender interference. Now some souvenier pucks and trash are raining onto the ice. Stay classy fans.

2:55 – Power play ends with the goal in the wrong net. Team USA has to fight off this momentum swing. What a classic!

4:15 – Petrangelo gets by the U.S. forwards and beats Campbell to the glove to get the shortie.

5:04 – Eberle heads off for high sticking. Team USA has a golden chance to get a big insurance goal.

5:33 – PK does its job. Back to full strength. The Pepsi sponsored cheer “Eh OH Canada Go” is not taking hold. This crowd is chanting either “Let’s Go Canada” or “Campbell”

6:55 – Zucker with a great diving clearance and Campbell with a good glove save. Penalty kill is holding.

8:18 – Jenks is headed to the box for slashing. These moments are what makes this tournament so fun.

9:25 – The entire place is chanting “Campbell” … have to love that test of nerves for the youngster.

GOAL: Team USA 4 – Canada 3
9:57 – Off a faceoff in the U.S. zone. The shot came from the point and was redirected to Campbell’s left. This crowd went from shocked to charged up.

12:17 – Canada is at even strength, but it’s the U.S. who is moving like its on the power play in the offensive zone. Danny Kristo is playing a monster game.

13:19 – Zucker just missed on a huge hit. Coming up on the home stretch. Look to get everything Canada has these next 10 minutes or so. That includes the crowd.

15:30 – I think it will be interesting to see how Blais plays this. The U.S. has had success being aggressive, but now holds a 2 goal lead. I am against going to kill the clock mode. (Again, sorry about the lost posts. I’ll try to make it up to you this period.)

17:56 – Team USA continues to control the pace of the game and seems to win most of the battles for loose pucks.

**** Apparently my previous 4 posts didn’t publish. I’ll do a short version. Canada scored to tie it on a great move by Eberle, then Johnson scored Team USA’s second shortie just before the break.

10:50 – Power play ends. Here’s where we find out a lot about Canada. Up until this moment, they’ve lead every game. Last year’s Canadian team rallied from 3 down. This is this year’s squad’s first test.

GOAL: Team USA 2 – Canada 1
12:52 – Tyler Johnson outworks his man near the wall and feeds a beauty pass to a streaking Schroeder, who broke in alone and beat Allen five hole. Huge momentum changer and a great play by two tournament veterans.

13:11 – Stepan penalized for hooking. Canada starts this power play in the U.S. zone.

15:00 – Nothing going on that power play. Canada was very strong.

17:00 – Della-Rovere lays a big hit on Lashoff and goes to the box for tripping. U.S. power play back to work.

17:50 – Schroeder with a big hit. I think that caught everyone in the building by surprise. Big save by Campbell on the other end.

20:00 – Second period begins.

I’ll be pulling double duty this period helping ferry some players to 2nd intermission interviews so if something dramatic happens in the last couple minutes of the period, you won’t see it on here until after the intermission. Just a heads up in case you are hitting refresh to no avail.

End of period 1: Team USA 1 – Canada 1
Strong period I felt for Team USA. They were hustling and Campbell made some good saves. Kristo is playing a good game all around right now.
At the intermission a guy just came two pucks shot from the far blue line short of winning $1 million. He did win a car though and probably has a fistful of raffle tickets.

4:34 – Fowler heads off for tripping and Canada gets a chance to take the lead late in the period.

5:34 – Faceoff coming in Canadian zone. U.S. has been aggressive so far and is winning a lot of battles.

8:00 – Canada took over on the power play and couldn’t manage any pressure. In fact the U.S. had more chances.

9:46 – Power play didn’t last long. Kreider goes to the box for hooking.

10:39 – Team USA back on the advantage. Hooking penalty on Luke Adam.

11:41 – A lot of back and forth. Very few shots so far from both sides.

16:20 – Philip McRae collects a loose puck after a scrum and slaps it in. Tied up.

17:57 – Campbell left the net to clear the puck and Canada stopped it at the point and fired it back in. It rebounded to the goal mouth and in.

20:00 – Here we go. No empty seats. Team USA’s in the blue. We are underway.

4 minutes to go. Teams are on the ice and the giant flag is headed my way. Will it pass over? I will say it won’t get any help along the way from seat No. 64. Passed over … didn’t help.

Less than 20 minutes to go and the 50/50 just passed 100k. The arena has a great system that allows a running tally of raffle sales to be displayed on the jumbo tron. Fans see the number climb and then go into a feeding frenzy.
The moment the pot went over 100k the whole place cheered.

So far I’ve only spotted one Team USA fan wearing some apparel. Maybe the rest are just wearing coats, or maybe it’s hard to find them in a gigantic sea of Maple Leafs.

Warmups have started. 36 minutes to go. I wonder if they’re going to send the giant Canadian flag over the press box as it rings the building?

We know the makeup of the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to a certain point right now.
Sweden wins group B and is in to the semifinals. The rest of group B is coming down to the Russia vs. Czech Republic game that will take place tonight. If Russia wins, they get the No. 2 seed and move to the quarters along with Finland. If Russia loses, it goes to tiebreakers to settle 2nd – 3rd between Russia, Czech Republic and Finland.
Switzerland clinched the quarters spot out of group A by beating Slovakia just before this game and they advance to the quarters.

The 50/50 pot for tonight’s game just crossed the $50,000 mark. By the time this is done we could be looking at the winner taking home 70-80 grand. By the time I wrote that sentence the pot went over 51k. Wow.

Team USA’s goaltending coach Joe Exter has starting goalie Campbell focused. He looked like he was in the zone on the bus and in the locker room area as he warmed up. They handed out thunder stick noisemakers at the gate so he’ll need that focus. It’s going to be extremely loud in here tonight.

Just over an hour until the puck drops and the building is already buzzing. Partially because it’s almost entirely full from the just completed Slovakia/Switzerland game. It’s way too cold outside for people to leave and come back so everyone just stayed in the building.

We’re right at 3 hours until the puck drops. I renew my offer of a USA Hockey pin to anyone who finds me in the press area (Wearing a USA Hockey sweater) and says “Go USA.” The offer stands to U.S. and Canadian fans equally and lasts until I run out of pins.
Dean Blais announced that Jack Campbell will start in goal for Team USA in this huge game. The young goalie has been solid and met every international challenge so far, but what he sees tonight will be his toughest test yet.
I really wish I was in Saskatoon so that I could come and get that pin. haha.

Kristo will be the freshman of the year in the WCHA for the Fighting Sioux. He runs their powerplay their too. Nice player. Hope he sticks around for another year or two.
Kristo is a true freshman playin for the University of North Dakota…he was picked up as a sophomore out of minnesota with a verbal agreement. He’s been incredible to watch this year, amazing hands and shot, sees the ice as well as about anyone I’ve ever seen. Good Luck USA! roll through the Ship now too! Our decade to dominate the sport starts.

Don’t worry Jim, we western prairie Canadians would never boo the US anthem. That’s an Eastern Canada thing. Believe me, in the west we have way more in common with you, the folks in Minnesota, the Dakotas etc than we do with folks in Ontario. We still cheer for Canada! But we cheer for the USA second. I hope its a Canada / US final. Great game tonight! Wish I could have found a ticket.

Not to say that we would not. We are _all_ soulless jerks in Ontario, clearly, thanks for clearing that up Matt.
I would suggest that in the future, there will be little difference between Canadian and USA hockey, unlike the difference that existed between Canadian and USSR hockey in the past. The reason for this is that USA hockey is based on Canadian hockey. The development of USA hockey has its roots in Canada — players, coaches, strategies, methods, etc. Over the years, USA hockey has been able to work Americans into the system. However, the style and approach to the on-ice product is fundamentally Canadian. Thus, we talk about the “North-American” game. To be honest, I hope that one of the other nations puts the necessary resources into becoming a power-house that can challenge North-American hockey, otherwise, the Canada-USA rivalry will become so common place that it will be more about politics than hockey.
Very impressed with the American game last night. Very Impressed! Next to impossible to beat Canada in this tournament and you almost did. Having said that, we are about to find out if U.S. Hockey has improved based on my “Upset Pick Of The Tourny”… Finland will beat the U.S. in the Quarters. This pick is based on the U.S.’s “History” at this tournament – after a big loss they fall apart. If U.S. hockey has turned the corner, they will beat Finland. If not, I will be right and they will lose. I (sincerely) hope I am wrong – you deserve a better fate. From a (sincere) Canadian, thank you for a GREAT game last night, your (young) players did you proud, and Happy New Year to everyone. See everyone at the World Juniors in Buffalo – I have my tickets. Perhaps it happened and I missed it (if so, I apolgize) but why isn’t the NHL making reference to the Classic World Juniors Game (WJRS) last night between the US and Canada? There would be nothing but positives coming from it… i) It would promote the U.S. Players/Kids (well deserved) and encourage other US kids to play hockey (look at the effect of the WJRS in Canada); ii) It would promote the tourny in Buffalo next year; iii) It would promote the game of hockey. Let TSN cut a promotional video that shows the amazing effort the US team put forward last night and SHOW IT. As, usual the NHL is missing a chance to sell the game to the US audience. Shameful.
That was an absolutely phenomenal game! Short handed goals; penalty shot; OT and then a shootout? CLASSIC! Kudos to the Americans…you dominated for a good 45mins. of the game, and you challenged us every step of the way. And to my Canadian boys….way to hang tough and pull it out in the end.

Doug here again – and I suppose we should not be filling up this USA Hockey website (which I agree is very good, Matt) with Canadian politics. However – I have lived in the west (lived in Regina Saskatchewan for 4 years – and LOVED it!). It seems like some westerners – especially Albertans – think that they are the only ones in the country who know how to work hard and that anyone east of Manitoba are lazy liberals looking for a way to live off the government. Well, that is crap. Matt, while you may not be able to accept this – we in the east – actually work just as hard as you good folks in the west. Having lived in the west and also currently having family in the west, I feel I am qualified to make this assertion.

First off thanks for the tip about orange oil. I admit that I gave up and bought some Raid after battling ants on my kitchen table for the past three weeks! I didn’t spray the Raid on my table! The biggest issue is we can’t find the trail so we have no idea where they are coming in. It’s been quite frustrating.
